Robert Sietsema attributed &#8220;the fruitcake plague&#8221; to the cheap sugar that was imported to Europe from the colonies in the 1500s in his piece &#8220;A Short History of Fruitcake&#8221; for the Village Voice in 2002.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Speaking of wedding fruitcake, it became very popular in Victorian England. Fruitcake also started to become a staple at holidays and other special events. A single-layer plum cake was presented by Queen Victoria during her own wedding to Prince Albert.<\/p><\/li><li><p>On the Apollo 11 space trip, a pineapple fruitcake was brought along. But when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to set foot on the moon, it wasn&#8217;t snugly nestled in their tummies.
