Ingredients:

  • 4 cups mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest (optional)

Instructions:

Wash the mixed berries thoroughly under cold water and drain them well. Remove any stems or leaves from the strawberries. In a large saucepan, combine the mixed berries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest (if using). Stir gently to combine.

Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the berry mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Once the mixture reaches a simmer, reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 30-40 minutes, or until the berries have softened and the mixture has thickened to a jam-like consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

As the jam cooks, you can use a potato masher or the back of a spoon to gently mash the berries to your desired consistency. If you prefer a smoother jam, you can use an immersion blender to puree the mixture.

To test if the jam is ready, place a small amount on a chilled plate and let it cool for a few seconds. If it thickens and wrinkles slightly when you push it with your finger, it’s done.

Once the jam reaches the desired consistency, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool slightly. Carefully transfer the hot jam into clean, sterilized jars, leaving about ¼ inch of space at the top. Wipe the rims of the jars clean with a damp cloth to ensure a tight seal. Seal the jars tightly with lids and let them cool to room temperature.

Once cooled, store the jars of mixed berry jam in the refrigerator for up to several weeks. Enjoy your homemade jam on toast, biscuits, or as a flavorful addition to your favorite dishes!

Making homemade mixed berry jam is a delightful way to preserve the fresh flavors of summer berries year-round. With just a few simple ingredients and some patience, you can create a delicious spread that’s perfect for breakfasts, snacks, or gifting to friends and family. So roll up your sleeves, grab some berries, and get ready to enjoy the sweet taste of homemade jam!
